STILL CHASING WINTER BASE MILES?
There’s a better way…
Traditional periodisation says we should spend winter building our base and there’s no doubt that ‘volume’ and periodisation works…
But, for most age groupers winter means dark mornings, cold temperatures and short days – not the best environment for long, easy training sessions
Instead winter can be a great time to focus on things that aren’t a priority during race phase and build a better athlete:
– get stronger
– move better
– improve efficiency
– raise the athletic ceiling
– build robustness
Not only can this be a nice physical change from race specific work it’s also lower volume it also provides mental/emotional variation as well. Win-win!
Reverse periodisation can be a really effective way for age group triathletes to make the most of the winter months, and arrive to their next summer race build with a better foundation to layer on the all important race specific work
Don’t just build kilometres. Build good habits, create consistency and reap the rewards later!
