Coaching: it’s not a hop on hop off tour bus…
Long term consistency and long term relationships will always yield the most positive results.
Your relationship with your coach is one such example. For some, however, because it is a hobby for them (the athlete) the coach and the coaching relationship isn’t given the respect it deserves.
We see many athletes starting with a coach to train for X or Y event (hop on)… this may be a 3 or 6 month journey, but, in any case it is never going to be optimal. Similarly, we see athletes completing these X or Y events (or in some cases life just getting busy) and they immediately think to cease or pause the coaching relationship (hop off)…
The Coach may be the driver steering your performance journey but they aren’t, or at least shouldn’t be, running a hop on and hop off service for athletes to come and go as they please. It comes back to a simple concept:
‘’If you are going to do something then do it properly’’
Some actionable steps:
– consider your performance journey and what it means for you in the context of your life (https://jetcoaching.com.au/understanding-the-role-and-value-of-structured-training/)
– take some time to seek out a Coach with values that align with yours
– be open and honest with yourself and your coach about your performance journey and goals
– take a long term view to the relationship, training and racing
– remember that coaching is more than simply the program that you follow (https://www.facebook.com/217240625055635/posts/2370144129765263?sfns=mo)
– understand the REAL value of coaching and having someone in your corner… for sport and for life
Save the hop on, hop off for your next holiday and in the mean time, INVEST wisely
