GREY ZONE?
No such thing.
There seems to be periodic chatter about a so-called ‘grey zone’ when discussing the intensity distribution of training or endurance sport.
There is no zone or range that should be avoided – they all have their place and are appropriate at times. To create sustainability and consistency the bulk of most training programs for most people should be at a relatively low training intensity. And there should also be some time spent at higher intensities.
That said, two things you should avoid:
– going too hard in your easy/endurance sessions
– and then in turn, not being able to go hard enough in your key/high intensity sessions
The combination of the two means you’re not getting the intended benefits of your easy sessions, nor the intended benefits of the higher intensity sessions which means they all drift into a middle ground where progression and performance will be stunted.
Moral of the story – do your sessions properly.
Easy means easy.
Hard session? Go hard!
Tempo is tempo.
Zone two is zone two!
Simple? Yes, relatively so. But a mistake many athletes make. Don’t be that athlete.
Be your best.
