Don’t tell me you have to get slower with age!
Many accept that as we age we must get slower… And the best we can do is try to ‘slow down less’
This doesn’t have to be the case, and moreover, it can lead to a defeatist mindset.
If we concern ourselves with improvement then there is no reason that this can’t extend to race results and outcomes.
As we edge towards 40 and beyond there may need to be a shift in focus areas in training, but progression can still be made.
Example of training prescription evolutions:
– More emphasis on strength
– Greater diligence when it comes to recovery
– Fewer ‘hard’ days
– Continued refinement of pacing and fueling
– Further emphasis on sleeping habits
Case Study example – John (JD, Dicko) Dickson
At 57 years of age John raced Geelong 70.3 and Huskinson Classic (1/60/10) on consecutive weekends and performed admirably in both races.
At Geelong he stopped the clock in 4.42 to record a PB, finish 4th in the Age group and consolidate his world champs qualification from earlier in the season.
The following week he won the 50-59 age group by 3mins+ at Huskinson with another well rounded race, topped off with a stellar run leg.
And, John is not new to the sport either… 10+ years of training and racing, half a dozen Ironmans and too many other races to count!
Consistency over time and continued evolution in approach.
So, don’t talk yourself out of it because you are ageing. Approach in accordance with your goals and history…. get after it #BeYourBest
Age is just a number.
