We often say that we should do our easy sessions easy so we can do our hard sessions appropriately hard…
It is also healthy to do the majority of your training at an ‘easy’ intensity.
But what is easy? Easy requires context to be defined…
When using physiology, heart rate is your best bet in terms of measuring intensity. You and your coach need to cap your heart rate and you as the athlete need to ensure you do not exceed this heart rate during ‘easy’ sessions.
The true value of doing this will be compounded over time…
The majority of age group triathletes have a higher heart rate at any given effort when running compared to cycling… furthermore, the majority will ride TOO easy and run easy, too hard.
All of the above considered you could ride at an ‘easy effort’ / in the ‘easy’ zone as determined by heart rate but it won’t feel easy at the end of the ride… context is everything. Be actively engaged in the process and understand why you’re doing what you’re doing!
